NYC-based brand Alala just had their first product drop for spring. This collection brings a fresh spring look without compromising Alala’s modern, urban aesthetic. The use of white in particular is crisp and refreshing alongside a happy spring yellow, and of course classic black. (Note that this is a pretty incomplete drop so far, since there are lots of styles still to come, and a few items have incomplete size runs that will be filled out in coming weeks.)
The signature captain crop style was released in a new yellow. This shade looks like more of a bumble bee shade rather than a highlighter yellow, although Carbon38’s pics make them look really bright. That said, C38 tends to be pretty heavy-handed with the post-processing, so I’m guessing Alala’s photos are more true to real life.
Alala debuted a new cross front bra, with a colorblocked back and a plunging front. Sadly, this one doesn’t look too friendly to anything above a B cup.
Although a lot of the extra-large mesh that was big in the fall has been toned down and replaced with more understated mesh, this mesh back tee keeps the honeycomb mesh going. I spy a hint of a new pink under there, too.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like this look with the new rolldown sweats and white cropped tee.
The beautiful sophisticate jacket that debited this past fall got an update for spring: the brushed neoprene sleeves were replaced with mesh for warmer weather.
The spring collection is full of plentiful pullover and jacket options of all weights, like this hooded boyfriend fleece vest.
Speaking of layering options, this neoprene jacket really plays to Alala’s modern vibes with its simple shape and the stark white contrasting with the bright yellow zipper.
I like the geometric look of this cutaway tank is an interesting tank on the muscle tank, with angular armholes outlined in black.
Alala hopped on to the one-piece trend with their bondi jumpsuit. It’s got honeycomb mesh details at the straps and waist, and is made of promodal french terry.
See all of what’s new so far on Alala’s site.
Since this drop is only a portion of what’s rolling out this season, I sleuthed some sneak peeks of what else is coming from the spring lookbook photoshoot:
I’ve seen numerous pics hinting at this new navy-white abstract pattern. From what I’ve seen, it looks like it’ll come in both the take sides knee tight (shown) and captain crops, plus tops like this cross front bra.
I positively adore the back of this tank. It was actually first released in Alala’s SS14 collection but is being brought back again this season. Also: looks like Alala will be venturing into booty short territory with the new print.
These items almost look like beach/surf wear perhaps?
Colorblocking with cocoa, a new shade of grey-brown.
P.S. Sale!
If there are some styles from the fall collection that are still on your mind, there’s a 25% off sale going on today for President’s Day. Use code PRESDAY25 by midnight Eastern time tonight. You’ll find some of the styles I’ve reviewed on the blog (link here) before, namely the victory bootcut pants, toughie tank, and flash tee. This might be your last chance!

I ALMOST ordered those yellow crops when they showed up on C38 but I just couldn’t pull the trigger because I know their fabric is on the lighter side and might show every little dimple. I ordered the tank whose low back mesh you adore but sent it back. For as risqué as it was for my gym and low support I couldn’t justify it sadly.
Suzanne | Agent Athletica says
Yeah, I think there’s definitely a risk of the light color being a bit revealing. Also, like you, sadly support tops almost never really work out for me, no matter how pretty they are. A girl can dream though…

So, I did order the crops, and they aren’t as sheer as I thought they might be (I have brown skin, if that makes a difference). Just as AA called it, they’re not as compressive a fabric as some other athletic pants, so they don’t hide all of my postnatal imperfections. I’m still keeping them because the color is great, and the waist really stays put. Will just wear with a longer shirt till I lose all the baby weight.
Also bought the sophisticate jacket. I love this because I can also wear it to work. Very important for a busy, lactating, full-time working mom of two under 3. I often do some conditioning at work running up and down stairs, burpees, squats, lunges, etc in my office at lunch when I can’t fit in the gym, and having a jacket like this makes it for me. Totally accommodates my huge bust. I will say that the ends are stitched but still unfinished. The arms are also snug if you’re muscular. The jacket is on the short side for me and I’m 5’7″.

Thank you SO much for letting me know about the yellow crops!! Maybe I’ll just get them and see. I really love the shade and like their knee crops. I understand about those postnatal imperfections!

Thanks for this follow-up! Glad to hear you like the yellow captain crops–the more I look at them the more my willpower wears thin…

Love that mesh back tee!

I’ve been wanting the Sophisticate Jacket since you posted about it but it still comes out to $178 with the discount. Never having worn their stuff that’s a big risk… :-(
I’m gonna type up a quick fit review of my Onzie purchases from C38 for you tomorrow. All but one piece going back!

get the delic crops??
Helen says
I got my delic crops and I love them. The material is a little thin but the colors would pretty much hide any underthings anyways and the print is too cute to return. I’d say they run a little big. I am a 4 in lulu and got a small.
h|c says
thanks!!
Alex says
I did! They run ver large. I got the small and could see when I pulled them out that they were too generously cut. I’m between a 2/4 in Lulu. I also hated the material. Very slippery and quite artificial feeling. I got another pair of Onzie crops in this order and had the same fit and fabric issues with them. I rely on a little bit of traction in pants I do yoga in for certain poses and these won’t have a tiny bit. Also, they just felt…plastic-y. Like not a natural fiber in them. Don’t know how that would work for me in a sweaty situation. The colors are beautiful, but Onzie isn’t my brand. For reference, when I first bought Teeki crops I was weirded out by their sleekness, too, though I have two pairs now I don’t reach for them often. Good thing I’m set with the Lulu pants I already own :-)
The Chic bra, on the other hand, I love. It’s a higher coverage (think Energy bra) version of the FTBW. I’m a 32-34 C and would never wear the FTBW to do anything athletic but I am going to try using the Chic bra for yoga tomorrow. The fabric is a lot nicer on the bra than it is on the crops, but it is more spandex-like (I don’t know anything about fabric compositions like some lulu lovers). It’s a beautiful color coral that would sell out at Lulu in minutes.

thanks!

Thanks for writing this up! I’ve felt Onzie fabric IRL and I know what you mean about it being quite slippery. If they’re too big for you I can probably kiss goodbye any hope of making them work for me. I’m glad the chic bra at least seemed to work out. Like you said, the coral looks really gorgeous.
Suzanne | Agent Athletica says
Yeah, it’s pretty pricey, but on the plus side, their sale stuff isn’t final sale. The one I got over black friday was pretty steeply discounted but I was still able to return it, I just had to pay return shipping (only a few bucks, which didn’t seem so bad).

I just bought 3 things with that code. Thanks for making me aware of this brand! I think this collection looks so sleek. I hope it holds up well for exercise, too.
Suzanne | Agent Athletica says
I hope so too! All the stuff I have from them has so far done really well. :)

This brand seems to be stepping up alot! About to order the Cutaway Tank is XS but it’s sold out :(
MESH: The mesh on the pretty yellow Captain crops are not so offensive, perhaps because the pants aren’t inundated with too many other design elements.
Liked the basic Fractal Tee which seems to drape really well, but not so much the mesh back. Will be keeping my eye on the future versions of this Tee which hopefully does not have mesh.
Thanks for highlighting this brand :)
Suzanne | Agent Athletica says
The cutaway tank looks like it’s in stock in XS right now, FYI, just limited numbers. I like the fractal tee, too, but don’t think the oversized design would look right on me. I also agree that the mesh on the crops isn’t too overstyled, which is really nice.

Loving the silhouettes on these clothes! So sporty chic!

I ordered the poncho with the discount code. Can’t wait for it to get here.
With the previous promo code I tried out the Sophisticate Jacket. I was quite disappointed that it cam with a loose button, a misaligned seam on the neck, and a couple of spots of uneven cutting on the neoprene. None of the issues were huge, but I expected a lot from a jacket of that price. I’m hopeful that this order is more reflective of their overall quality.
Suzanne | Agent Athletica says
Oh, that’s sad to hear. : I haven’t heard anyone else bring that up, and the sophisticate jacket I ordered didn’t have any issues. Since it’s a newer/smaller brand, I imagine there’s an occasional snafu since they aren’t quite as much of a well-oiled machine as some of the more established brands. In my own experience and from what I hear from others, I don’t think that’s indicative of what to expect. I hope you have better luck with the poncho. :)
shanflower says
I figured it was a one off. They are carried in one of the luxury gyms in my area and people there wouldn’t keep clammoring for more items if there were quality issues.
I’m very hopeful that I’ll love the next piece. My only real complaint is that they didn’t waive the return shipping given that it was the result of a quality issue.
I’ll report back when the poncho gets here.
