Review: Alala Captain Crop Tights and Zip It Up Bra in Cerise

November 19, 2015 / 19 Comments

Time for an Alala review bonus round!

When I was at the mall a couple weeks ago, I checked out Six:02 for the first time.  If you don’t already know, Six:02 is a women’s activewear store owned by Foot Locker.  Besides the obligatory array of shoes, the store also stocks quite a few activewear brands like Adidas by Stella McCartney, Nike, etc.  But they also happen to carry Alala!  I’ve never gotten to try any Alala on in a store (I always have to order it) so it was fun to do some try-ons.  They only had a small stock of items from Alala’s first fall product drop, but there were still a couple of new things to check out.  When I was talking to the associate, I told her how excited I was that they had Alala in store, and she loved the fact that I actually knew about the brand already.  She was incredibly friendly and fun to talk to, and even gave me a 20% off coupon for my purchase.  I will definitely visit Six:02 next time I’m in the area!

I had actually ordered the cerise captain crops a couple months ago when they first came out, but they weren’t opaque enough for me in a squat/bend.  I was so bummed about it because the color is so beautiful.  I tried them again, and sure enough, this pair was much better!  So, there does seem to be some inconsistency in fabric thickness and coverage with these crops.  If you’re worried about coverage, I wouldn’t recommend buying a pair you can’t return.  At any rate, I’m happy I found a pair that works!  This color rocks.

I’ve reviewed the captain crops previously, but here’s a quick recap.  The fabric is slick and pilling-resistant, similar to lululemon’s luxtreme, but softer and silkier.  The cerise color from this fall is even softer than my cobalt captain crops from last year.  The waist and hips run pretty true to size, but the legs run a bit bigger.  The medium-high rise waistband fits firmly and stays in place very well, even without a drawstring.  The length is design to hit mid-calf and is pretty much the ideal crop length on me.  I haven’t had any issues come up with the mesh tearing on my cobalt captains.

These (obviously) came home with me, and for a surprise 20% off, no less!  My new shiny pewter captain crops come in a few days, too, then I’ll have a nice little captain crop stash. :)

Zip it up bra

I also tried on the zip it up bra, since I’ve heard several people say is great.  They’re right: it’s awesome!  The wide band is very firm and supportive.  I wear a 28-30 band, so most sports bra bands are loose and unsupportive on me, but this one was actually great.  Depending on your shape, you may be more comfortable in a size up.  The straps and overall fit were very comfortable, and the coverage is high enough to not cut into breast tissue.  The support felt comparable to lululemon’s energy bra, which is usually my go-to.  The fabric is like the crops above, but multi-layered for coverage and support.  My one gripe is that there are no slots for cups, so I’m hoping they’ll add those in the future like they did with the cut bra.

Despite how wonderfully this fit me, I couldn’t bring myself to part with another $75, so I left it at the store at limited myself to just the crops.  These bras go on sale from time to time, so I’m hoping I’ll snag one then!  Maybe Black Friday?  I love the cerise especially, and it looks gorgeous with the crops.

(P.S. Yes, I did try on the blade tee in the background, too, to complete the cerise madness.  I don’t have pics, but it was too big on me, so it was very blah.  Awesome fabric though!)

They both look great on you. I’ll have my eye out for a good sale at Alala for Black Friday. I think they have this bra at the rack online right now. I was tempted but all they have is a small. It says color is just red but it looks the same. Great deal @$30!

You’re right, that’s the same one! :) $30 is an awesome price. Since there’s only 1 I wonder if it was some kind of return or something.

I had a six:02 nearby, and I never noticed Alala there! Granted, I just did a quick pass through the only time I’ve been, so next time I need to spend more time looking around. The cerise color looks similar to lulu’s bumbleberry.

I’m not sure whether they have it at *all* locations, but it’s worth a check! I meant to compare my BB CRB to cerise (currently out of town so I can’t), but I believe cerise is a noticeably brighter.

Still waiting on my blade tee. I’m a pretty much solid size 6 in Lulu though I am “bustier” so I’m hoping that a small will fit fine. I’m traveling around Vietnam for two weeks at Christmas and it’ll be good to stay cool yet still be “modest” and “covered”. Shoulders are best kept covered in SE Asia for more than one reason.

I think the S will be a good size for you. I am a lulu 2 and the XS blade tee felt like it would best fit a lulu 4, so I imagine the S would be great for a lulu 6. I hope you get it in time and that it works for your trip. :)

These are on sale for $74 on Revolve. I wondered if it’s because they are sheer but nice to know they’re not. Hmmm…I’ve loved this color since I first saw it and am tempted. Plus, I checked and you can return sale items at Revolve.

If you could use your Revolve code from your ordering snafu on top of the markdown, that would be a killer price. Of course, that’s assuming the pair you get has enough coverage for you, which seems to be a little bit of a gamble with these!

I have yet to find a Canadian stockist. : There’s a newer site, hemm.ca, that carries a bunch of other brands (similar to what Carbon38 stocks) but no Alala. :(

I wear a size 2 in lulu bras, including the energy bra (though the new colors this year seem smaller than my old ones), and the Alala XS fits me pretty well. I would say the XS zip it up bra fits like a lulu size “3” (little bit smaller than a 4 but probably not as small as a 2). The cut bra runs VERY small, at least a full size (XS is like a lulu size 2, maybe even slightly smaller). The cross front bra in XS fits more like a 4, and I have not tried the in a snap bra. If you’re a different size in lulu, hopefully that still helps give you some idea of how they run!

Hi, I saw Alala ads on Facebook and thought it looked nice but didn’t buy because it was expensive but now that I’ve seen it pop up on your blog so much, I think I’m finally ready to get some. How do their XS leggings fit on you? My measurements put me in their XS size but I’m rarely a XS on the bottom (21″ thighs!) and solidly a 4 in Lululemon. Their XS looks perfect for you and I’m definitely a size bigger which makes me think I should get a S. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance <3

I hope I’m not too late! It really depends on the leggings. Some of them, e.g. the heroine tights and siren tights run a bit smaller, while the captain crops and captain tights run slightly larger. More often than not though, their XS is pretty close to a lulu 4, so I would start with that size. :)
