Out of Alala’s spring/summer collection this year, these two styles are definitely near the top of my list. I got a different color of each near the start of the season, and ended up liking them so much that I went back for more.
The mesh tank (in both colors) has been my go-to top all season. It’s one of my favorite hiking tanks since it’s so lightweight and breathable. Because of the material, I don’t have to worry about my backpack pilling the fabric, either. Since the fit is loose, I don’t find the white to be too revealing. All you can really see is the color of your sports bra underneath. And, despite wearing this about 10 zillion times already, it still looks perfectly white!
The cropped length looks amazing with high-waisted bottoms. I love this tank with lululemon’s align crops for a breezy, light-as-air feel all over (here’s an example of that outfit combo). And of course, the heroine tights I’m wearing in this post are a great combo, too. The combination of a shorter top (but not TOO short) with higher waisted bottoms can make petite ladies like me look a little taller. Since just about everything is too long for me, the slightly cropped top and 7/8 tights looks refreshingly proportional on my small frame.
I also recently discovered the tank looks great with lulu’s speed shorts as well, which is great since I practically live in those shorts during the summer. I thought the top would be too short for speeds, but it just skims the top of the waistband, which is good enough for me. The shorts + mesh combo is definitely a winning outfit for blazing hot days when I want the coverage of a top.
As for the bottom of this outfit equation, let’s talk about the heroine tights for a hot minute. I’m on the short side, so Alala adding a 7/8 length option is great for me. I love the details like the subtle color pop panel, the side perforation, and the sweeping curved seams.
The heroine tights are made of a compression fabric that’s different from most of Alala’s other bottoms. It fits smaller and has a different feel to it. If you’re familiar with Werkshop’s crop/legging fabric, the feel is quite similar. I got my heroines in XS, which fits me perfectly. This style fits about half to one full size smaller than Alala’s captain crops/leggings in my opinion. If you’re between sizes, I recommend sizing up. They feel particularly tight at first, but mold to your body after a couple of wears.
Shortly after I bought these palm green heroines, Alala came out with another version in hibiscus, which I also love. Still on the fence about whether having all 3 colors would be overkill…
P.S. I also highly recommend the siren tight from this season. It’s another of my most favorites that I’ve worn frequently over the last few months.

how is the waistband on the tights? the captains (and most alala tights) are too tight in the waist and too loose across the hips for me (so sizing up or down doesn’t help). do these have a ‘straighter’ shape?
i love the mesh top too. i bought black first and went back for white :)
just placed my first nordstrom anniversary sale order… phew… i might need to not shop the rest of the month :-/

Hi Carrie,
The captains fit me perfectly but the aligns and the heroine tights are too tight across the hips for me, so it might actually be perfect for you. It fits tighter than the captains.

Lying flat, the cut is similar, but since the fabric is different, they definitely feel different on. Like Werkshop, they mold to your body after a couple of wears, so you might have better like with these vs the captains.
I was eyeballing a couple of pairs of ankle boots on the Nords sale but one of them sold out in my size since I don’t have early access. Perhaps a sign that they’re not meant to be–I don’t need them anyway I suppose. So, I might escape unscathed…tbd.

OMG just saw the unicorn leggings that werkshop is releasing. Holy Macaroni! They are utterly devine. Way to go werkshop for living up to everyone’s incredibly high unicorn expectations.
The new dragons are pretty spectacular too. shit.

I can’t decide between full length and cropped unicorns. D: Leaning toward crops at the moment but the jury is still out.

I got the full length. On their lighter colored bottom I feel like the crotch seam and gusset is more obvious on the crops than the full lengths… but if you don’t have that issue, the unicorns are a good candidate for crops cause there is not a lot of detail at the bottom that is “cut off” with the crops.

What size is the mesh tank you’re wearing? XS? I wear a size 4 in LLL tanks and I can’t decide to go xs or s for more length? TIA!

Mine is an XS. I normally wear a 2 in lulu tops. It’s quite loose (obviously) so if you size up to an S it will definitely be a relaxed fit.
